Four low-income families in Okahandja received the keys to new homes this week under the Buy-a-Brick Initiative, a housing programme backed by Standard Bank Namibia and community partners.
The handover forms part of Standard Bank Namibia’s N$2.5 million investment in the initiative, which is implemented in partnership with the Shack Dwellers Federation of Namibia (SDFN) and the Namibia Housing Action Group (NHAG).
The four houses were made possible with additional support from VIVO Energy Namibia, BodyWise, Standard Bank Private Bank and Ninety One Namibia.
The ceremony was attended by Okahandja Mayor Iileni Mutumbulwa, Otjozondjupa Governor John Julius //Khamuseb, Ninety One Namibia Chief Executive Officer Eino Emvula, representatives from Standard Bank Namibia, the Namibia Housing Action Group, project partners, the beneficiary families and community members.
Nelson Lucas, Standard Bank Namibia’s Executive Officer for Corporate and Investment Banking, said the project highlights the impact of collaborative efforts.

“Today is not simply about handing over houses. It is about creating a place where families can build their futures with greater security and peace of mind. A home provides a foundation from which people can pursue opportunities, support their children and plan for the years ahead,” Lucas said. He added that the Buy-a-Brick Initiative shows what can be achieved when corporate partners, community organisations and residents work together.
This year the programme has already delivered results across multiple communities. Fifteen houses were handed over in Okongo, 16 more are earmarked for Opuwo, and the four homes in Okahandja complete the allocation for that town. In total, 35 families will benefit from Standard Bank Namibia’s N$2.5 million contribution in 2026.

Speaking on behalf of the Ministry of Urban and Rural Development, Special Advisor Boniface Mutumba described housing as a national priority that requires urgent action from government, the private sector, local authorities, civil society and communities.
He commended Standard Bank Namibia and its partners for helping address the country’s housing shortage and improving living conditions for vulnerable households. Mutumba also acknowledged the role of the Shack Dwellers Federation of Namibia and the Namibia Housing Action Group in advancing community-led, affordable housing solutions.
Standard Bank further recognised the longstanding work of the Shack Dwellers Federation of Namibia, which has empowered communities through savings groups, collective action and self-help housing initiatives that have enabled thousands of Namibians to access decent homes.
“As Standard Bank, we remain committed to initiatives that create measurable impact and contribute to stronger communities across Namibia. Through programmes such as Buy-a-Brick, we continue to support solutions that improve lives and create positive change where it matters most,” Lucas said.
