MarketingWorld’s CMO of the Week: Eric Amponsah of Fidelity Bank Ghana

With a career spanning over 15 years that has transformed brands and driven tangible business growth, Eric Frempong Amponsah is a beacon of strategic innovation in marketing and communications. As Head of Brand & Corporate Communications at Fidelity Bank Ghana, his journey from academia to executive leadership exemplifies resilience, vision, and impact. This strategic story unfolds across four pivotal chapters, highlighting his achievements that have elevated industries and inspired professionals.

Foundations in Strategy and Client Mastery
Amponsah’s early career laid a robust groundwork for his ascent. Starting as a Graduate Teaching Assistant at the University of Cape Coast, he honed analytical skills in a dynamic academic environment. Transitioning to consulting at ShawbellConsulting Limited and business development at MG Systems Ltd., he excelled in forging partnerships and driving revenue. At Ogilvy, as Account Manager, he spearheaded 360-degree campaigns for sectors like pharmaceuticals and banking, developing communication and digital strategies that boosted client portfolios. His role at Universal Merchant Bank as Marketing and Communications Manager saw him master social media, brand management, and media relations, delivering competitor insights and internal engagement initiatives that strengthened organizational cohesion.

Agency Leadership and Financial Turnaround
Amponsah’s tenure at TeleMedia Communications Ghana marked a strategic pivot to high-stakes leadership. As Head of Strategy/Client Services, he optimized client relationships; as COO, he streamlined operations across creative, media, and digital departments. Culminating as CEO, he led a 10-person team to slash year-on-year losses by 70% within 12 months, achieving the agency’s first profitable half-year in three years by June 2020. This turnaround showcased his acumen in proposal development, PR, and digital strategies, expanding the client base amid economic challenges.

Since joining Fidelity Bank in 2020, Amponsah has scaled new heights. As Head of Digital and Brand Marketing, then Acting Head of Marketing, he aligned brand strategies with corporate goals, executing digital campaigns from concept to measurement.
