South Africa: Heineken Beverages South Africa Introduces New Initiative Dubbed “Employee Share Ownership Plan” for its Employees

An important player in the South African beer and cider market, Heineken Beverages South Africa has introduced an employee share ownership initiative dubbed the “Employee Share Ownership Plan” for its employee.

This move by the company which comes in response to conditions set by the South African Competition authorities following a merger aims to benefit nearly 5,000 employees in South Africa.

Through a Workers Trust, employees will have the opportunity to hold a 6% stake in Heineken Beverages South Africa. The plan is accessible to both current and future full-time employees, as well as fixed-term contractors engaged with the company’s South African operations named “Bokamoso,” which translates to “future” in Sotho, the plan signifies a collective future where employees are recognized as essential contributors to the company’s success.

Millicent Maroga, Director of Corporate Affairs at Heineken Beverages South Africa, reflected on the choice of the plan’s name “Our people are at the heart of our business, and we consider our employees as partners on our growth journey, geared towards our future together. We are happy that our stakeholders were in full support of our name choice.” She said

It is interesting to note that the company has adopted an employee share ownership model without a specified vesting period, ensuring equal participation among all employees.

Enid Lizamore, HR Director at Heineken Beverages South Africa, highlighted the rationale behind this approach.

“Having a scheme with no defined end date or fixed term allows benefits, in the form of dividends, to flow to both present and future employees indefinitely.” Lizamore added

Heineken Beverages South Africa intends to distribute dividends semi-annually based on the company’s performance. This initiative underscores the company’s recognition of the pivotal role employees play in driving its success and growth.
