The Nairobi Serena Hotel hosted a Swahili Night event for its guests on the 27th of September 2024. Hosted inside the Cafe Maghreb, the event was an ode to the coastal culture.
Swahili night is held twice a year to celebrate Kenya through great food, music, and dressing from the coastal region of Kenya.
This is a theme night showcasing Swahili cuisine, where a variety of spices are the dominant ingredient. Swahili cuisine is rich in spices and has African, Indian and middle eastern influences. Some common food items in everyday lives of the Swahili people are coconut rice, samosa, seafood, milk teas and sweets such as Mahamri and Halwa (sweetened Arabic dessert)
The aim of such theme nights is Serena Hotel’s way of ensuring the preservation of its authentic cultures in areas where they have properties.
Juma Tutu and the Swahili Jazz ensemble were performing Swahili tunes to keep the audience enthralled and entertained all night long. Women were beautifully adorned in deras and gents in Kanzus to honour the theme.
