For Hafsat Abiola-Costello, the daughter of late business mogul and politician Chief MKO Abiola and Alhaja Kudirat Abiola, service to humanity is becoming her second nature. Her work of fostering democracy and women’s leadership and equality in Nigeria has been fetching her honours home and abroad. But the newly appointed executive president of Women in Africa is not yet done with receiving honours. On the occasion of the International Women’s Day, Hafsat, along with some incredible women, she will receive the European International Women’s Leadership Award 2019 on March 7 in Brussels, Belgium.
Hafsat is the eighth child of the late business mogul, MKO Abiola. She graduated from Phillips Academy, Andover in 1992 and Harvard College in 1996. She received an honorary doctorate from Haverford College.
She is the founder of China-Africa Bridge and China Africa Forum, which promotes mutually beneficial cross-cultural collaboration between China and Africa, with focus on women’s contributions to the economy.
In 2000, Hafsat was honoured as a Global Leader of Tomorrow at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland. She is married to Nick Costello, a diplomat with the European Union. They both have a daughter, Anabella and son, Khalil.
