Globacom reduces call tariffs amidst price hikes

Globacom has announced a reduction in its call tariff, setting it apart from other operators who have raised their rates following the Nigerian Communications Commission’s (NCC) 50 percent end-user tariff adjustment in January.

Following NCC’s approval, the average call rate per minute now stands between ₦13.80 and ₦23 per second. However, Globacom’s new rate adjustment offers its subscribers a reduced call tariff of 22k per second to all networks, making voice calls more affordable.

In a Short Message Service (SMS) notification, the telecom provider informed customers: “Dear Customer, we have recently adjusted our tariff to serve you better. Your voice call rate has been reduced to 22k/s to all networks, making calls more affordable. Your existing Berekete bonus balance is valid and will expire by 12th March 2025. To check your available Berekete bonus balance, dial 3102#. Thank you for choosing Glo.”

A source within the company confirmed the validity of the message, dismissing concerns about misinformation. “It is not fake news. Since it was sent from the backend of the network and does not request customers to click any links or disclose personal information, there is no cause for concern,” the source stated.

Despite the tariff reduction on voice calls, SMS rates remain unchanged. A network check confirmed that both Glo and MTN Nigeria charge ₦4 per SMS, while Airtel Nigeria has increased its rate to ₦6 per SMS in line with the NCC’s directive.

Meanwhile, Globacom has reiterated its commitment to enhancing its nationwide network infrastructure. In a recent statement, the company emphasized its ongoing network upgrade efforts to ensure optimal service delivery to millions of subscribers.

“As part of our network expansion, we remain committed to building world-class telecom infrastructure and providing our customers with the most affordable voice and data services,” the company said. The upgrade project includes improvements across the core network, transmission and IP networks, fiber backbone, and power systems, among other areas.

The current phase of the upgrade, launched last year, involves the nationwide deployment of new base transceiver stations (BTS) and enhancements to existing ones. These efforts aim to improve high-speed data services and alleviate network congestion in densely populated areas.

Recently, Globacom commissioned additional BTS infrastructure in Lagos, Ogun, Nasarawa, Rivers, Edo, Delta, Cross River, Kaduna, Kano, and Abuja. Hundreds of LTE 2600 sites were also deployed in key markets across Lagos, Oyo, Ogun, Ondo, and Kwara, as well as select tertiary institutions in Rivers, Edo, Abuja, Enugu, and Anambra.

In alignment with the Ministry of Communications and Digital Economy’s broadband penetration initiative, Globacom has expanded its data network capacity and upgraded infrastructure across 1,700 sites nationwide. These enhancements focus on improving network quality in states such as Ogun, Oyo, Ondo, Osun, Ekiti, Edo, Delta, Anambra, Enugu, Abia, Ebonyi, Bayelsa, Benue, Nasarawa, Kaduna, and Plateau.
