Apple to Launch In-House Modems in iPhone SE as Part of Strategic Plan
Apple is making significant strides in its ambitious three-year plan to surpass Qualcomm’s technology by 2027, beginning with the introduction of its own modems in the iPhone SE. This move marks a major milestone in Apple’s efforts to replace Qualcomm’s components and enhance its technological independence.
The updated iPhone SE, set to launch in 2025, will feature Apple’s in-house modem, code-named Sinope. This is the first update to the iPhone SE since 2022 and comes after Apple’s substantial investments, including the $1 billion acquisition of Intel’s modem department and the recruitment of top engineers from other silicon companies. The new iPhone SE will also boast significant enhancements, such as Apple Intelligence and an edge-to-edge screen.
According to BrandSpur digital news, Apple has conducted extensive global testing and quality control with carrier partners to ensure the modem’s reliability. Unlike Qualcomm’s modems, which support six or more carriers, Apple’s first modem will support four carriers and will be manufactured by Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing.
Looking ahead, Apple plans to introduce its Ganymede second-generation modem by 2026, which will feature increased carrier aggregation and mmWave functionality, aligning with Qualcomm’s current standards. By 2027, the Ganymede modem is expected to be integrated into high-end iPads and debut in the iPhone 18 series. Additionally, Apple aims to surpass Qualcomm by 2027 with its third modem, code-named Prometheus, which will include advanced AI capabilities and improved performance. Future developments may also see Apple combining its modem and CPU for enhanced efficiency.
Apple’s strategic shift towards self-reliance in modem technology is set to revolutionize its product offerings, bringing more control over hardware and performance enhancements to its devices. As Apple continues to innovate, the industry eagerly anticipates the potential impacts on the smartphone market and beyond.
