Varun Beverages Zimbabwe will introduce Carlsberg beer to the local market on 20 September, marking the first phase of a strategic partnership with the Danish brewing giant and the start of Carlsberg’s formal entry into Zimbabwe.
The company will initially import and distribute Carlsberg products using its existing national distribution network, with plans to begin local manufacturing next year once a new brewery is completed.
The arrangement forms part of a broader sale and distribution agreement between Varun Beverages Limited and Carlsberg covering markets across Africa. Zimbabwe has been selected as the first country in the phased rollout.
Varun Beverages Zimbabwe Chief Executive Officer Vijay Kumar Bahl said the company would leverage its established route-to-market infrastructure to make the brand widely available.
“Over the years, Varun Beverages Zimbabwe has built a strong, multi-layered route-to-market and distribution network, supported by people, infrastructure and execution capabilities, reaching customers across the country,” Bahl said.

“We now look forward to putting that distribution strength behind a globally recognised beer brand and bringing it closer to Zimbabwean consumers.”
The partnership expands Varun’s footprint in Zimbabwe beyond soft drinks, where it already operates manufacturing and distribution facilities.
It also introduces a new competitor into a beer market long dominated by Delta Corporation, the country’s leading brewer.
In the second phase of the collaboration, Varun plans to invest US$250 million in a brewing facility to be developed in partnership with Carlsberg. The project is expected to create at least 2,500 jobs across the value chain and support the transition from imported products to locally produced Carlsberg beer.
Bahl previously described the distribution agreement as the foundation for a wider expansion strategy that could position Zimbabwe as a key manufacturing base for Carlsberg in the region.
“Varun Beverages Ltd signed a sale and distribution agreement for beer with Carlsberg for Africa, including Zimbabwe as the first phase.
In the second phase, manufacturing will be done in Zimbabwe with the successful launch of beer in the local market,” he said.
The September 20 launch will allow both companies to establish brand presence and consumer demand while construction of the new brewery progresses, setting the stage for full local production in 2027.
